Tabea Debus with recorderAt the opening of the 2019/20 season Tabea won the 2019 Soloists Prize at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany, a Concert Artists Guild prize in New York and 1st Prize in the Society of Recorder Players, Moeck Competition.  She will give debut concerts in North America in 2021.

Described by Classsic FM as ‘challenging perceptions of the instrument’ Tabea is constantly exploring the horizons of music for recorder and has performed widely in Europe, Asia and the USA.

This season her programmes include music based around sight, hearing and the passage of time, ranging from baroque to contemporary.  She returns to Wigmore Hall and Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, makes her debut at the Spoleto Festival in the USA and at the Sanguine Estate Music Festival in Australia. In 2020 she records for Delphian, and collaborates with La Serenissima and The English Concert. 

Over the last year Tabea has undertaken a tour of Colombia, and given recitals at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saffron Hall, the Bath, Ryedale, Ripon and Lammermuir Festivals.  She look part in LSO Soundhub and released her fourth CD Favourites, a follow-up to the highly acclaimed XXIV Fantasie per il Flauto, which featured twelve newly commissioned pieces based around Telemann’s Flute Fantasias.   

Previous highlights include recitals at Konzerthaus Vienna, the Schleswig Holstein, Edinburgh International, Brecon Baroque, Musica Antiqua Bolzano, Baroque at the Edge, the Brighton, London and York Early Music Festivals. She has collaborated with Iestyn Davies, Rachel Podger, Richard Egarr, Lawrence Cummings, the Dunedin Consort, La Serenissima and The English Concert, among many others. She was selected by Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2018.

Born in Würzburg in Germany, Tabea studied at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK) with Professor Michael Schneider and the Royal Academy of Music in London with Pamela Thorby, graduating with distinction and the Principal’s Prize.  She was a City Music Foundation Artist, Handel House Talent Artist, RAM Meaker Fellow and St John’s Smith Square Young Artist.

Awards include 1st Prize in the 2014 Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and 2011 Hülsta Woodwinds International Competitions and 2nd Prize at The Arts Club – Sir Karl Jenkins Music Award.  As a founding member of the ensemble tr!jo she won top prizes at the XVIII Biagio-Marini and 2nd International Berlin Bach Competitions.

Tabea teaches recorder at Wells Cathedral School, regularly leads composition and chamber music workshops at the Royal Academy of Music and Cambridge University, has collaborated with London Music Masters and Jackdaws Music Education Trust, and been an adjudicator for the British Composer Awards (BASCA) and Jugend musiziert.

She released her debut album Upon a Ground in 2012 (ClassicClips), followed by Cantata per Flauto in 2016 (TYXart), XXIV Fantasie per il Flauto in 2018 (TYXart), and Favourites (TYXart).
